How to Drive Defensively

Defensive driving is a very important concept nowadays. It has been around for a while but as our lives go at a faster speed, so do our cars. We then need to reevaluate the way we drive.

My father always tells the story of how this one driver cut ahead, got on his lane abruptly and caused him to rear end the his car. He won the case in court but still had to spend over a week without his car. He had several instances like that, so eventually he decided that something else had to be done. This is when I got into defensive driving.

The first rule without question is to buckle up. There are multiple studies with dummies where the damages on not using the seat belt can become life threatening. Just a little click folks.

Then is something that should be logical for all but unfortunately it is not: stay alert and always awake. If you start feeling tired and are alone, get on the shoulder for a little while until it passes. Two seconds is all it takes for a tragedy to occur.

Another great tip is to think ahead. If you see a less than perfect driver ahead of you, someone who gets the signals messed up all the time or simply seems to be challenged, take action. You need to constantly anticipate this person's moves as long as he or she is ahead of you. There is no certainty as to what or how they will do it. Then a good habit that comes from the previous one is to anticipate things in order to avoid getting into an accident. Accidents cause jams which in turn cause more accidents out of plain frustration.

Respect traffic signs. Yes Mr. or Mrs. I- am-behind-and-in-a- hurry, if the maximum speed is 80 miles an hour you should never exceed that; also, the yellow light means slow down, not hurry up. Forget about the car in the back.

All these rules are very simple if you just look at them by what they are. Too bad humans have become so arrogant that we sometimes realize we are violating the law and still get angry at those who have every right to be upset.

In general terms the best piece of advice I have heard on preventive driving is to simply let the others get ahead of you and have their accident someplace else. It may sound funny or selfish but that is what it really means. Let us keep our eyes on the road and our hands on the wheel. The rest of the people on the car will thank you.
